John Wilson Overbey III, 74, of Clinton, Arkansas, passed away on May 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born on August 1, 1950, in Nashville, Tennessee, John was the son of the late John Overbey Jr. and Marjorie Overbey. He grew up in Nashville alongside his siblings: Diana Meek (Rusty), Dana Short (Rick), Scott Overbey, Chris Overbey (Kelly), and Glenn Overbey (Laura). A graduate of Franklin High School, John went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army, stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. It was there he met the love of his life, Cindy, and they married on December 29, 1972, in Franklin, Tennessee.
John pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree in business from the University of Central Arkansas in 1978. Upon graduation, he began his career in the oil industry in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, then briefly moved to Midland, Texas, before settling in Houston, where he worked for many years in the industry.
Together, John and Cindy built a beautiful life, raising their daughter Lisa and later welcoming their cherished grandchildren, Olivia, Ian, and Rhys, who brought him endless joy. John's devotion to his family was steadfast — he was their rock, their guide, and their greatest supporter.
In later years, John transitioned to entrepreneurship, launching a home inspection business. In 2020, he and Cindy returned to Arkansas, where they made their home by the lake. There, John found great joy spending time with his family. He loved to garden, and spending time outdoors. Some of his happiest moments were spent hunting alongside good friends. A lifelong student of history, especially the Civil War, John approached life with a curious mind and steady reason.
Known for his love of puns and his deep, unwavering logic, John had a quick wit and a warm heart. He was a man of quiet strength who lived fully, loved deeply, and laughed often. His family, his greatest joy, will remember him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend — a man who truly loved life and was deeply loved in return.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Cindy Overbey; his daughter Lisa Bruce (Bill); and his treasured grandchildren Olivia, Ian, and Rhys.
John will be dearly missed, forever cherished, and always remembered.
The family will hold a private gathering to honor and celebrate his life.
